Thomas Eyre Macklin (1867-1943) - 1885 Watercolour, Tranquil River Scene
DescriptionA fine and atmospheric 19th Century watercolour with gouache highlights, depicting a rural landscape scene at dusk with figures by the river. The artist has balanced the composition, with the distant hills providing perspective, and the position of the figures suggesting a bucolic setting. The soft treatment of light seen in the river in the foreground, as well as the sky, indicates a strong picturesque quality. Signed in the lower left hand corner, as shown. Signed and dated. On wove.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, particularly towards the top of the picture. Some very minor surface dirt underneath the glass. Generally in good condition.
