Terence John McCaw (1913-1978) - Signed 1974 Watercolour, South African Mountain

Terence McCaw was inspired greatly by Paul Cézanne. A stylistic trademark of McCaw's was his very light application of paint, which is excellently demonstrated in the present painting. McCaw was preoccupied with the construction of colour and form to transcend the traditions of landscape painting. Conveying the feel of his home country was at the heart of all McCaw's paintings of South Africa. The present composition was likely painted en plein air in early morning - his light paint application and loose washes allow the view to imagine the morning mist creeping down the foothills of the mountain range. Revealing peaks that dominate the few tiny farm houses and fields nestled at the foot of the range, McCaw pays homage to the awesome landscape of his home country.

Signed and dated.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age. With areas of discolouration and foxing. There is a loss to the lower left corner (as seen in photos). With some areas of minor mount burn and scuffing to the outer edges. Some areas of surface dirt. The board has been cropped at the upper edge, with the paper slightly coming away from the board.

Artist Biography

Terence John McCaw was a prominent figure of the Cape Impressionist movement in the early-mid 20th century, which saw European trained painters seeking a new way to capture the landscapes of South Africa.

After his studies at the Wits Technical Art School in the early 1930’s, McCaw studied at Heatherly’s School and the Central School of Art in London in 1935, with his contemporaries, Freida Lock and Gregoire Boonzaier. The trio participated in exhibitions with the London Group, and, once back in Cape Town, became founding members of the New Group in 1937. They campaigned for a fresh vision in the South African art world that would embrace the new European movements and influences.
