Description

A fine and carefully detailed 1916 watercolour with graphite by the artist Samuel John Lamorna Birch (1869-1955), of Chepstow Castle on the river Wye in Wales. This meticulously detailed content has an angled viewpoint, adding interest to the scene, alongside areas of more expressive washes to create movement and life in the composition. Well displayed in a grey mount and presented in a thin sliver vintage effect frame, as shown. Signed and dated and inscribed. On wove.

Condition

In fine condition. Minor scuffing to the frame, resulting in some paint loss. Generally in good condition.

Artist Biography

Samuel John Lamorna Birch (1869-1955) was a painter, born in Egremont, Cheshire. Self-taught except for a period of study at the Atelier Colarossi, Paris, 1895 he was one of the early members of the loose-knit association of artists in Cornwall known as the Newlyn School. He settled at Lamorna in Cornwall in 1897 and took the name Lamorna to distinguish him from another painter in the same area called Birch. He exhibited at the RA from 1892 and was elected an Associate of the RA in 1926 and RA in 1934. In 1906 he held his first one-person show at the Fine Art Society in London.

He was a prolific exhibitor and showed also at the Greatorex Galleries, Ipswich Fine Art Club, NSA, RWA, RI and at the Goupil Gallery. He visited New Zealand in 1937 where he is represented in many public collections. He also designed posters for LMS railway examples of which are held by the NRM. His work is also represented in Beverley Art Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Falmouth Art Gallery, who gave him a retrospective exhibition 1997, Lancaster City Museums, Sheffield Art Gallery, Penlee House Museum and also in the Tate Gallery, London.
