Collection InformationRon Jones was born in South Wales, a country which has greatly influenced his work. Its valleys' industrial landscapes have been a strong source of inspiration for some of his early paintings and have remained a potent stimulus for his memory and imagination, on which some of his latest works are based. He has a distinct appreciation for dramatic shapes which express themselves rhythmically and are complimented by strong colours and contrasting light. His intention is to make direct major and minor references to human activity whether they are associated with work, leisure or social interaction. His drawing ability has been in evidence throughout his work from an early age. He further developed this and other skills when his family moved to Birmingham after the war when he attended The College of Art. He subsequently began teaching art and design in various Birmingham secondary schools and was ultimately appointed as Senior Lecturer at Birmingham Polytechnic, teaching on the PGCE, DipSE and MA courses. Ron took early retirement and was invited to help set up the Midlands region of the Open College of Art. He also took the opportunity to concentrate more on his own love of painting. He was a major prize winner for two consecutive years of the professional section of the City of Birmingham Tulip Festival and shared first prize at the Birmingham & Midlands Institute Exhibition. He won several other awards including The Artist Magazine Award at the Patchings 2000 exhibition. He has exhibited with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Birmingham Pastel Society Biennial Exhibitions, The Mall Galleries London Pastel Exhibitions, Royal West of England Exhibitions in Bristol, Welsh artist shows in Cardiff & Newport, Malvern Theatre exhibitions, Bewdley Annual festivals and with Five Midlands Artists in Birmingham. His work also features in numerous private collections in the UK (former curator of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery), Europe & Japan.
