Artist Biography

Roland Batchelor was a painter, born in Chelsea. He spent his boyhood hours in the Cast Room at the V&A with his father who made sculpture casts and mouldings for a living. In 1905 he joined the Civil Service remaining there for more than four decades. However, he spent all his spare evenings at a number of art schools including Putney School of Art under George Morrow and Regent Street Polytechnic where one of his teachers was Harry Watson. After retirement, he had invaluable tuition at the City and Guilds of London Art School with Middleton Todd.

He was given a Centenary show at Catto Gallery in 1989. In 2003, New Academy Gallery exhibited Roland Batchelor’s Etchings from a series of plates produced in 1936 and published by the Gallery in the 1980's. He spent many years travelling to France and is perhaps best remembered for his ability to capture movement in pen, ink and watercolour. He exhibited at the RA and at the RWS of which he was an active member until a few months before his death. He died just a few days short of his 101st birthday. Examples of his work are in the collection of the V&A.
