R. L. Dodge - Early 20th Century Oil, French Summer Cottage
DescriptionA late 19th/early 20th century oil depicting a rural country cottage. Areas of impasto create the illusion of ivy climbing around the quaint cottage, with a barn and outbuildings visible to the right. The painting looks to be partially unfinished, with areas of the composition not yet filled in. An indistinct signature, possibly reading 'R. L. Dodge' is visible at the lower left, with an inscription, 'Auvers Sur', likely referring to 'Auvers-sur-Oise', a commune in the north-western suburbs of Paris, France. It is associated with several famous artists, the most prominent being Vincent van Gogh. On canvas board.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and fraying of the canvas to the outer edges. A minor loss to the upper centre area of the board. Surface dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.
