Artist Biography
Orlando Greenwood was born in Nelson, Lancashire, working at his uncle’s cotton mill from the age of thirteen. He went on to study at Goldsmiths’ College of Art from 1913, where his education was interrupted by the First World War. Greenwood served in the Royal Engineers, and it was only after the war that Greenwood started to make a name for himself. In 1925 he held an exhibition in London that launched his career.
Greenwood exhibited widely with the Royal Society of British Artists, to which he was elected Associate Member in 1920 and Full Member in 1922. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. A centenary exhibition was held at The Bloomsbury Workshop in 1992.
Greenwood worked in an array of styles. He completed iconic poster designs for the London Underground and the Great Western Railway, and advertisement designs for London shops such as Liberty and Whiteleys.
