Artist Biography

Ella Constable was born in Temuka on the South Island of New Zealand, and was given the Maori name of Arahenua, which her family soon shortened to Winoa. She was a daughter of Hugh Golding Constable and was a great-granddaughter of John Constable. She appears to have resided also in County Kerry, Ireland during the years around World War I during which time she exhibited at the RHA. During the 1930's she was living in East Anglia and was at that time a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1932-39. She lived at Dedham, Essex, not too far from East Bergholt from where her famous artist relative lived. Her mother Elinor May Constable was also an artist.
