Norah Glover FRIBA (b.1923) - Signed 1967 Oil, Hilltop Town Scene
DescriptionA fine example of well regarded British artist Norah Glover. The impressionistic style and subtle application of paint with a palette knife gives this piece a particularly nostalgic feel. Signed and dated. On board.
44.6 x 67.9cm (17.6" x 26.7")Framed Size: 52.9 x 74.1cm (20.8" x 29.2")
Trained as an architect (she did the drawings for the Barbican scheme), Miss Glover has a perception of her subjects that is controlled but not rigid, restrained but hardly dull. She paints using thin layers, placing glaze upon glaze to produce an image bathed in a Turner-like glow. Her treatment of light and the subtleties of her colour allow her buildings and trees to take us by surprise as the forms emerge through a monochromatic haze. The blues and greens of the Canal near Hungerford, the golds and browns of Bath Abbey. the purple haze of Woodbridge from the River Path envelop the viewer. The discipline is admirable, the beauty quiet and satisfying. The atmosphere is really rather special.
