DescriptionMary Ann Baines - Original 1873 Graphite Drawing. Graphite with bodycolour, signed and dated in pencil to the lower left. Fixed to backing board measuring 42.5 x 29 cm Signed and dated. On wove. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Surface dirt mainly to the backing board. Mary Ann Baines was married to William Mortimer Baines, son of Hewley Mortimer Baines. They married in New Zealand where William bought land and invested in saw milling and gold mining. He was summoned back to Bell Hall as the new heir after the death of his brother, Henry. Arriving in England, Mary Ann, William and their eight children lived at Hemingborough Hall, until William inherited Bell Hall when his father died in 1874.
