A fine charcoal drawing with chalk details, by the artist Margot Russell (née Battersby). The artist has depicting 'Miss Georgina Russell', likely to be her daughter, in semi-profile with her hair up in a bow. There is a label to the reverse from the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, inscribed with the address '5 Paultons Square, Chelsea, SW3.'. Well-presented in a washline mount and wooden frame, as shown. Signed and dated. On wove.

Condition

In very good condition overall, with some surface discolouration. There is a small mark to right side of the mount.

Artist Biography

Margot Russell née Battersby (1913-1988) was born in Loughton in March 1913. She studied art as a young woman in London in the early 1930’s. She married an eminent Doctor but still found time to paint and exhibit at the Royal Academy and the Royal Portrait Painters Society amongst other London venues. She received a large number of portrait commissions from the late 1930’s up to the early 1960’s. During this time Margot had several solo shows in Chelsea and several exhibitions overseas. In 1966 she suffered a stroke which stopped her from working for several years until she made a complete recovery. She continued to work and lived in Chelsea until her death in 1988.
