A fine original early 20th Century watercolour by the British artist Joseph Compton Hall RBA (1863-1937), depicting a rural countryside view of Lewes, on the River Ouse. The artist has achieved a great sense of compositional balance, with fine naturalistic form and palette. Well-presented in a fine carved wooden frame and washline mount, as shown. With the artist's handwritten label to the reverse. Signed and incsribed on the reverse. On watercolour paper.


In very good condition overall. The frame has some minor scuffing and marks.

Artist Biography

Joseph Compton Hall FRIBA RBA (1863-1937) was a British architect and painter of landscapes, predominantly in watercolour. Born in Cork, Ireland, to William Bancks Hall, he attended King William's College on the Isle of Man. He became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1901, most notably completing alterations to Dunham Massey Hall, and several church restorations.

He was later elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1918, and exhibited at the RBA, as well as the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He was also a member of the Langham Sketch Club, and Chelsea Arts Club.
