DescriptionA charming oil painting showing a summer orchard scene by listed British artist John Whitlock Codner RWS (1913-2008). Showing the Gloucestershire countryside in early summer, the use of vibrant, verdant tones beautifully captures the hazy warmth of the season. Codner's distinctive style combines a post-impressionist style with a modern use of colour and form. Inscribed, dated, signed and titled on the reverse. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.
There is some light surface dirt to the surface, otherwise the artwork is in fine condition.

Painter born in Beaconsfield, Codner served in the Royal Engineers between 1939 and 1945. After the war, he studied at Regent Street Polytechnic, London under Harry Watson. He went on to become an assistant master at the Sir John Cass School of Art in the City of London between 1947 and 1951. He has been a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, RP and the RWA of which he is an elected member, 1937 and joined the Bristol Savages in the same year. Well-known as a painter of portraits, his sitters include Duke of Beaufort. He has work in several permanent collections such as London University, the Institute of Civil Engineers, GAC, Gloucester City Museum & Art Gallery and the Royal Institute of General Practitioners as well as several other private collections worldwide. The son of artist Maurice Codner, until his father’s death in 1958 he used the signature John Whitlock as many of his portraits were often indistinguishable from his father's work.
