John Strickland Goodall RBA, RI (1908-1996) - A Pair of Framed Watercolours
A pair of 20th century watercolours from the eminent illustrator and artist John Strickland Goodall. Depicting two Victorian Society Scenes, the first is entitled 'The Empress', and shows two very finely dressed ladies in large crinoline gowns, promenading with their dogs. A tall gentleman with a top hat follows behind them. The second entitled 'The Flower Seller', depicts a young lady and girl purchasing a small posy of flowers from a child street seller. Both are delicately painted with washes of watercolour and graphite detail, touches of gouache have also been used to give the composition depth and perspective.
Goodall became one of England's most beloved artists due to the subject matter of his works, the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Goodall illustrated for the Radio Times and Bystander and produced numerous books, particularly for children.
Both works are well presented in pink wash line mounts and gilt frames.

John Strickland Goodall was born in Heacham in Norfolk in 1908, the son of Joseph Strickland Goodall an eminent cardiologist, and his wife, Amelia Hunt. He came from a long line of doctors. He attended Harrow School. His father permitted him to leave academia and instead train as an artist under two family friends Sir Arthur Stockdale Cope and John Watson Nicol. From 1925 to 1929 he attended the Royal Academy of Arts. He concentrated on-line drawing in the 1930’s and began to paint in watercolour while stationed in India at the end of WWII. He is arguably best remembered for conversation pieces and late 19th-century pastiches in watercolour and gouache. His work was exhibited at RA, Walker Galleries, Paris Salon and he was elected to the RI and RBA.
