An original 1706 mezzotint by John Smith after Sir Godfrey Kneller, depicting His Grace John, 1st Duke of Marlborough, Marquis of Blandford, an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs. Inscribed 'Sold by J. Smith at Lyon & Crown in Russel Street, Covent Garden'. This same rare work can be found in the collections of the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Signed in the plate. On watermarked laid.Condition
In good condition for a picture of this age, with some surface discolouration and foxing, mainly to the left edge. Some light surface abrasions, and scuffing. Trimmed within the plate. A good impression with depth.
