DescriptionA late 19th Century coastal landscape depicting a beach with cliffs in the distance, possibly of the Cornish Coast due to the artist living in the area. Well presented in a gilt frame with a cream mount. Signed. On wove.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor foxing.

John Shapland (1865-1929) was a well known painter of seascapes and landscapes mainly in watercolour and gouache. Shapland exhibited at the RA entitled 'Fairy Led' and 'Paradise Lost'; his work was also shown in Paris and the USA. Shapland was the headmaster of the Exeter School of Art from 1899 to 1913, and at one time he was in business with the well known Devon artist W. H. Sweet.
