A very fine and dramatic coastal landscape by the artist John Hewitt (1922-2006), depicting crashing waves on a rocky shoreline in Cornwall, England. The artist has produced a distinct sense of movement and drama using expressive brushwork and a layered multi-tonal palette. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.


In fine condition. Minor scuffing to the edges of the canvas.

Artist Biography

John Hewitt (1922-2006) was a British visual artist. In 1939, at the age of 16, he began an apprenticeship in the RAF and during World War II his work as a mechanic took him to South Africa, Rhodesia and India. Demobbed in 1953 he settled in Cornwall, near Newquay. He had however contracted tuberculosis which resulted in his having a lung removed and while convalescing he took up painting. Self-taught, by 1960 he had begun to exhibit at the Society of Aviation Artists later turning his skills to depicting Cornish seascapes. In 1968 he opened his own gallery in Rock, North Cornwall, which he ran for nearly 30 years. He was a member of local societies including the East Cornwall Society of Artists and the Torbay Guild of Artists and a painting by Hewitt is in the collection of Bodmin Town Council.
