Description

A very fine watercolour study by listed British artist John Doyle RWS (b.1928). Picturing a Venetian canal scene, Doyle has beautifully captured the bright morning light, hitting the left side of the water and tops of the faintly outlined architecture in the distance. Doyle's distinctively minute brushstrokes and impressionistic style gives an atmospheric and picturesque view of Venice. Well presented in a washline mount and simple wood frame. Signed, dated and inscribed with partial legibility on the reverse. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some surface dirt, scuffing and discolouration to the page and mount. WIth some minor marks to the edges of the frame.

Artist Biography

Painter born in Sydenham Hill, who studied at Maidstone College of Art where his tutors included Gerrard de Rose and Paul Wyeth and privately under John Ward. Doyle has exhibited in Canterbury Cathedral and in 1977 painted a picture for Archbishop Coggan which was presented to Pope Paul. He has shown at at Spink and Son, London, and was elected a member of the RWS in 1977 and has exhibited in the Royal Academy summer exhibitions since the 1960's. From the summer of 1987 to the following spring he journeyed down the Thames in a small cabin cruiser painting landscapes, villages, towns and cities for his book. John Doyle visited India and fell in love with the country and its people, so much so that he gave paintings to the Maharaja of Jodhpur's famine appeal which were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1989. A prize-winner in the 1994 Singer Friedlander Watercolour Exhibition he has more recently shown at the Catto Gallery, Hampstead, Chris Beetles Gallery, London and he was elected President of the RWS, 1997-2000.
