Ida Bale after Hogarth - Early 20th Century New Zealand Oil, The Shrimp Girl

A characterful portrait study by the 20th century New Zealand artist Ida Bale after William Hogarth's 'The Shrimp Girl'. Unfinished, the original Hogarth can be found in the National Gallery, London and provides a rare example of Hogarth's later work in which he experimented with a more expressive brushstroke.The artist has captured her expression perfectly - we can imagine her in a bustling tavern or market street calling out to her regular customers. Though her dress may be dark and homely, her face lights up the portrait.

The painting is beautifully presented in a period gilt frame with scrolling berry and leaf decoration to the outer edge, and acanthus leaf detail to the inner.

Condition

There is general discolouration to the varnish which has caused yellowing to the painting. This would be resolved with surface cleaning and removal of the old varnish. There are also some tiny spots of surface dirt which would also be resolved with surface cleaning. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The frame has very minor old wear, but is in good condition and is very attractive.
