Collection Information

Herbert Cole (1867-1930) was a draughtsman, illustrator, engraver and designer of bookplates. He attended the Manchester School of Art from 1887, and subsequently worked as an illustrator, as well as teaching costume illustration at the Camberwell School of Art. He was strongly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, including Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Walter Crane. He illustrated volumes of poetry, literature and children’s books, published by John Lane, J.M. Dent and other notable publishers around the 1890s-1920s. He worked primarily in ink, pencil and watercolour. His portrait of Sylvia Pankhurst is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.

From a collection of illustration boards by Cole, two of which are title-page designs for Cole’s book ‘Heraldry and Floral Forms used in Decoration’.
