Harriet Day - Rare 19th Century Album, Engravings, Beadwork, Music and Poetry

Item Sold

A rare and vastly interesting survival, this original 19th Century album belonged to Harriet Day, a Victorian lady of not insignificant means, with regards to the quality and magnitude of this scrapbook. The album begins with a hand painted title page with the owners name and floral border. Dating to the mid 19th Century, the book is an incredible historical insight into the life and society of the period.

The volume contains a wide variety of 18th and 19th century etchings and engravings, beadwork, gouaches, various writings and poetry, as well as delicately cut out gilt embossed paper. Also included is a loose beadwork panel reading 'VICTORIA', as shown. Portraits, hand-coloured prints and botanical elements, as well as highly artistic scrapbook arrangements and hand drawn music scores, illustrate and decorate over 150 pages throughout.

In handsome full leather bindings, with tooled gilt decoration, arabesque motifs and foliate scrolling. Lettering to spine 'Scrapbook I'.

In good condition overall, for a scrap album of this size. The boards have scuffing and wear to the edges and spine, and the front board and spine are loose from the interior. Pages have some undulation and scuffing to the edges and corners. Some light foxing on some pages, and adhesion discolouration in places.
