Gordon Howes

From a collection of fine gouache artworks by scientist, Gordon Howes, depicting tropical fish and American landscapes. The impressive level of detail, in particular to the fish studies is indicative of Howes scientific knowledge. This clearly impacts his artistic style, visible in his tendency towards photo realism.

Born and educated in London, Gordon Howes joined the Natural History Museum in 1968 as a scientific assistant in the fishes section. Besides cataloguing and researching the collection Gordon published over 40 scientific papers on freshwater and deep-sea fish. He also collected and observed fish in their natural habitats in Africa, and North and South America. His paintings of fish have been exhibited in London, Johannesburg and in a solo exhibition at the Natural History Museum in Geneva. Examples of his work can be found in corporate collections such as the Fishmongers Livery Company, London. Howes later retired to Sussex to illustrate books and technical publications while exhibiting a number of landscape works locally.
