Framed 19th Century Oil - Figures in an Interior
DescriptionA splendid and stately interior scene in oil on metal panel, illustrating an interaction between two European men in 16th or 17th Century military dress. One of the figures is presiding over the other, who is signing a document at a table. Two fluted columns with entablature in the background add a sense of formality to the scene, and the broken tobacco pipe may indicate issues concerning trade, as the pipe is a traditional symbol for exploration and trade. Well-presented in a gilt frame with a Greek key design and leaf mouldings, as can be seen in the images provided. Unsigned.
In fine condition overall. There is some small surface spot marking to the painting, possibly due to the metal substrate. The frame has lost beading to the upper rear edge, but otherwise is in fine condition, with only small scuffs and marks. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.
