Elizabeth Mary Watt (1886-1954)- Signed Watercolour, Beach at Carradale, Kintyre

Item Sold

An exuberant summer view of a Scottish beach at Carradale, Kintyre, by the acclaimed Scottish artist Elizabeth Mary Watt. The scene captures the beauty of the Scottish Highlands and the pristine, secluded beaches that are found there. Watt celebrates her home country in this painting, using saturated, primary colours to depict the rich blue waters, the distant red shipping houses and the array of warm yellow tones in the sand and heather covered hills. Her large, distinctive signature is found in the lower left corner and she has inscribed the location on the reverse. We can see that the lower left portion of the composition has been left unpainted - it is possible that this is a preparatory study for a larges piece. There is a less finished watercolour sketch on the reverse. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Foxing to the lower left corner as shown. Very slight mount burn.

Artist Biography

Elizabeth Mary Watt was a painter and ceramicist born in Dundee, Scotland. She attended evening classes at Glasgow School of Art between 1906 and 1917 during which time she worked as a fabric designer for the local firm Joseph M Saddler. She worked as a decorator of ceramics but was primarily an accomplished painter, exhibiting at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy and with the Glasgow Society of Women Artists. In 1919 she was made a member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists, and often exhibited with Kate Wylie. During World War II she was employed painting numerals on aircraft dials using radium based luminous paints. She had the eccentric habit of licking her paint brush as she worked. This may well have contributed to her death from leukaemia.
