William Maliphant (1862-1932) - 1890 Watercolour, Country Garden in Spring



A charming watercolour painting with areas of sgraffito by the artist William Maliphant. The scene depicts a bight country house with a figure in her garden. Monogrammed to the lower right-hand corner. Signed 'William W. Maliphant' and dated '18-9-90' on the reverse. Well-presented in an old oak frame with linen mount. ; On watercolour paper.


The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor scuffs to the frame, otherwise in fine condition.

Artist Biography

William Maliphant (1862-1932) was the son of John and Elizabeth Maliphant, born in Brynmawr, Breconshire. His parents later emigrated to Pennsylvania in the US, the place Maliphant found inspiration to become an artist. His father, John, died in America, so Elizabeth and William returned to Britain, making their home in London. In 1881 they were living at 1 Station Road, Wood Green, Tottenham. At the age of 17, William became a pupil to a draughtsman, working on wood. Maliphant later enrolled at the Westminster School of Art, studying under Frank Brown and M. Londau. Maliphant's first picture 'The Kissing Mom' was hung at the Royal Academy in 1889. The artist has since exhibited several oil and watercolour pictures at the Academy, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the R.B.A. His main subjects include pastoral scenes and landscapes from the Usk Valley. 'Washing, Breconshire', a 'Mill on the Usk' are among his most popular works. William died in St. Bartholomew's Hospi­tal, London. He is buried in Llanbedr, Breconshire.
