J Fittler after C Loraine - 18th Century Engraving, Embarkation Of St Ursula
DescriptionA late 18th C print engraved by James Fittler (1758-1835) after the original painting by Claude Loraine (1604-1682). A dynamic scene showing St Ursula preparing to embark on her trip around Europe in avoidance of marriage. The plate is inscribed on the lower margin with the artist's names, the dedication and original collection location. Signed in plate. On wove.
This engraving is in need of serious repair. There are heavy losses to all sides up to the plate lines, a large tear from the top edge to the centre and a smaller one from the bottom edge to the edge of the image. Discolouration and foxing throughout.
