James Lindsey Bird began his career by winning an artist scholarship to Italy, an experience which became highly influential on Lindsey's preferred subjects and style. Settling in North Yorkshire fishing port of Whitby, his preoccupation with the coastal scenery is apparent throughout his works from the forties period onwards. Lindsey also became highly regarded as a portrait painter completing various high level commissions, including a portrait of the Queen Mother in the drawing room at Clarence House.
