A fine and detailed watercolour painting with gouache details by the artist Charles Hudson Cox (1829-1901). The scene depicts a coastal view with several ships and a city in the background. Well-presented in a washline card mount and in a wooden frame with gilt effect detailing. Signed and dated. On wove.


The condition is typical for a picture of this age including discolouration and foxing. Some scuffing to the frame.

Artist Biography

Charles Hudson Cox (1829-1901) was born in Liverpool, England. Cox was a Landscape painter, illustrator and teacher. He studied at the Kensington School of Art, London. The artist has exhibited at the Columbian Expo, Chicago, 1893; Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Tex.; AIC, 1900. He was a cotton broker in Liverpool and continued in the export business at Waco, where he settled. Painted western subjects including bluebonnets (wildflowers). He died in 1901 in Waco, TX.
