Framed 19th Century Dutch School Oil - The Smoking Man

Item Sold

A fine playful 19th Century Dutch School oil depicting a seated young man smoking a white clay pipe, typical for the period. This picture has a charmingly congenial manner, and the artist has carefully set the scene, with a wooden barrel and tableware suggestive of a public house or tavern. This conventional view of daily life is celebrated as a moment, the sitter gazing upwards in contemplation. The smoke in the air shows the particularly delicate handling of the medium.

Well-presented in an ornate gilt wood and composition frame, with corner ornamentation and inner lamb's tongue running pattern.

Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

In good condition overall, especially for a picture of this age.
