Mid 19th Century Oil - Two Figures over Wood Bridge
DescriptionAn unusual and intriguing oil painting composition, depicting two figures in conversation over a wooden bridge. The scene focuses on the bridge and water stream underneath it as the central element, with the two figures creating an interesting dynamic. A small village can be seen in the distance. The lower right-hand corner seems to be unfinished. Presented in a wooden gilt slip. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
The condition includes some discolouration and craquelure to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals restoration and over painting throughout the surface. Minor areas of paint loss, mainly to the edges. Canvas has been relined. Widening of the joints and paint loss to the slip.
