After Palma Vecchio - Fine Early 20th Century Watercolour, Portrait of a Poet
This very fine Italian School watercolour portrait displays typical and distinct characteristics of the High Renaissance period, such as contrasting tone and compositional order. After an original work by Palma Vecchio (1480-1528), the artist has captured the sense of romantic vision in the original subject. The casual manner of the seated poet adds to the aesthetic beauty of this work. The artist has retained the finely detailed foliate background, contrasting with the soft form of the human figure, and the billowing cloth of the gentleman's outfit.
Handsomely presented in a fine gilt wooden frame with large gilt flat and beaded detail.Unsigned. On board.
In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some very light scattered surface abrasion, and localised areas of craquelure to areas where gum arabic has been applied. These are stable and do not affect the overall aesthetic. The frame has some small surface marks, and light scuffing to the gilding and corners.
