Description

A lovely still life oil painting by the listed artist Marie-Therese Ralli, painted on Daler Board. There is a handwritten label affixed to the reverse which has been inscribed with the artist's name and address. Inscribed on the reverse.

Condition

There is craquelure present to the middle section (on the flower pot and the glass bottle). Several small and scattered areas of paint loss, including the top right and bottom left corners. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of in-painting. There is a crease to the bottom right corner and some surface dirt along the lower edge. Paint loss and creasing to edges will be hidden when framed.

Artist Biography

Marie-Therese Ralli (nee Deflandre) was born in Belgium and studied Fine Art and History of Art at the Atelier Henriette Bosche where she was awarded the Bosche Diploma. Between 1941 and 1943 she studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux Arts achieving a 1st level degree and in 1946 she studied oil painting with the artist Henri Logelain. Later that same year she moved to London with her new husband George Ralli. After moving to Bristol in the late 1950s she became a member of the Clifton Arts Club, the Bath Society of Artists and an Associate Member of the West of England Academy, exhibiting regularly with those organisations. Whilst living in the South West Marie-Therese Ralli continued to develop her work, working with artists Peter Clay and George Street, studying at Bristol Polytechnic and completing a two year course in Enamelling under artist and tutor Elizabeth Turrell.

In 1982, after the death of her husband, she moved to Chiswick to live with her daughter. She became a member of the Barnes and Mortlake Art Society and attended art classes at the Shaftesbury Centre, Richmond College where she worked on still life, portraits and life-drawings. A prolific artist with great talent who worked with oil, pastels and conte-crayon and had a fabulous eye for the depiction of light and shade effects.
