A fine original early 20th Century oil painting by the British artist Joseph Compton Hall RBA (1863-1937), showing a coastal view from a rural village street. A number of small fishing boats lines the sides of the harbour, the occasional figure visible to the left and right sides. The artist has achieved a great sense of compositional balance, with fine naturalistic form and palette. Well-presented in an ornate gilt frame with leaf and berry detail, beading and a gilt slip. Signed. On board.Condition
There is some light surface dirt to the artwork and a number of losses to the frame which have been filled and retouched, as shown.

Artist Biography
Joseph Compton Hall FRIBA RBA (1863-1937) was a British architect and painter of landscapes, predominantly in watercolour. Born in Cork, Ireland, to William Bancks Hall, he attended King William's College on the Isle of Man. He became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1901, most notably completing alterations to Dunham Massey Hall, and several church restorations.
He was later elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1918, and exhibited at the RBA, as well as the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He was also a member of the Langham Sketch Club, and Chelsea Arts Club.
