John Ivor Stewart PPPS (1936-2018) - Fine 20th Century Oil, Surrealist Nude

Item Sold

A fine original Surrealist female nude study in oil by the artist John Ivor Stewart PPPS SBA (1936-2018), depicting a female figure, laying in the shallow waters of a cave. A decorated stone lies before the distant horizon of the water to the right of the composition.

Stewart has a dynamic approach to the human form, and his nude studies exude both character and atmosphere. Here, this work has a potentially allegorical nature, suggestive of feminist theories surrounding Plato's Cave. The headlessness of the figure highlights the viewers perception of pure objectivity.

The artist has also painted a riot of colour to the reverse of the canvas, as shown in the images provided.

Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

In very good condition overall. There is some very light surface scuffing to the edges of the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

43 x 51.6cm (16.9" x 20.3")
Sheet: 45.4 x 53.7cm (17.9" x 21.1")
