In good condition for a picture of this age. There is some surface discolouration, and light foxing to the sky. Very minor scuffing to the corners of the frame.

Douglas Houzen Pinder (1886-1949) was a painter of coastal views, landscapes and deserts in oil and watercolour. Born in Lincoln, but associated with Newquay most of his life, as his mother moved there when Pinder was a child, after the death of his father. He was articled to a local firm of architects in the early years of the 20th century but soon after, turned to painting. A conscientious objector during World War I, he worked as a postman as part of the war effort. Nothing is known of his artistic education but living in Cornwall did not present a problem and he probably had lessons locally. He travelled in Egypt and painted many desert scenes. Pinder appears not to have exhibited his work at any of the recognized societies in either Cornwall or London but preferred instead to carry out his own sales. He painted views of Dartmoor where he lived for a time and some of these pictures are signed 'Ben Graham' or 'A. P. Shepherd'. It was not uncommon in those days for artists to have two or more aliases as it was a good way of getting round restrictive contracts with a particular gallery, and of course a good way of avoiding the taxman.
