Description

A beautifully delicate study showing the coastline along King's Lynn, Norfolk. Spiers has used gum arabic to enhance the rich tones particularly along the crimson sails of the boats. Well presented in a washline mount. Signed. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. With light mount burn visible to the edges of the page.

Artist Biography

Ceramic artist and landscape painter born in Oxford the daughter of a stationery manufacturer and a sister to architect Richard Phené Spiers (1838-1916) and Walter Lewis Spiers(1841-1925), who became curator of the Sir John Soane Museum. Charlotte spent her early career at the Minton factory in Kensington Gore where she worked as a freelance artist alongside another successful Minton artist, Ellen Welby. She was regular and highly regarded professional exhibitor at shows staged at Howell James & Co. They were based in Regents Street in the capital and were sellers of high-class jewellery and silverwares. She also showed at the Ipswich Art Club 1890-1903 and exhibited regularly at the Society of Women Artists who elected her and Associate in 1893, New Gallery, RBSA, Dudley Gallery, Dowdeswells, FAS, Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Leicester Galleries, MAFA, NG, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, RHA and RI. She died in Christchurch, Hampshire.
