Zygmunt Turkiewicz was a Polish painter and graphic artist prominent throughout the 20th Century. Having graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1934 Turkiewicz’s artistic career was interrupted by the onset of WW2.
During the war, he was captured by the Soviets but released during the amnesty. Continuing to paint during his military service, he exhibited his paintings in Baghdad together with Józef Jarema.
Taking up residence in Italy after 1946, his works were part of an exhibition organized in Rome of twelve Polish painters showing the battle of Monte Cassino.
In 1947 he settled in London , where he quickly established contact with a group of Polish visual artists. In 1961, Turkiewicz’s work was shown at the Grabowski Gallery in an exhibition of works by Polish artists under the joint title of "Tension and Contrast". Two years later, the Dorian Galleries in London organised a large exhibition of Turkiewicz's works, fifty-nine paintings, drawings and gouaches. He was also a regular contributor to the Paris Kultura for which he wrote columns on painting.
Dealing with immigration and identity Turkiewicz’s graphic style included many graffiti paintings, gouaches, frescos and collages. His unique style combines thick and complex paint textures with softened abstract compositions. Strikingly reminiscent of religious stained glass windows his vibrant colour palette gives the work a strange optimism.
