Fine Late 19th Century Oil - Spanish Man Playing a Lute

Item Sold

A fine late 19th Century impressionistic portrait of a Spanish gentleman playing a lute, on mahogany panel. The artist has employed a distinctive layered style, with vivid red contrasting with the otherwise muted naturalistic palette. The sitter gazes directly towards the viewer, wearing a traditional embellished jacket and hat.

Well-presented in a gilt effect wooden frame, as shown. There is a label to the reverse, from Lechertier, Barbe & Co, and dating to the period 1827-1898 when the business held premises at 60 Regent Street, London.

In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some minor craquelure, and minor previous surface restoration. Inspection under UV light reveals these small spots near the upper edge. The frame is in fine condition.
