With gouache highlights and areas where the artist has intentionally abraded the surface, the painting has been signed and dated to the lower right corner and is well presented in a double card mount and a gilt effect frame. Signed and dated. On wove.

Margot Russell née Battersby (1913-1988) was born in Loughton in March 1913. She studied art as a young woman in London in the early 1930’s. Margot married an eminent Doctor but still found time to paint and exhibit at the Royal Academy and the Royal Portrait Painters Society amongst other London venues. She received a large number of portrait commissions from the late 1930’s up to the early 1960’s. During this time Margot had several solo shows in Chelsea and several exhibitions overseas. In 1966 she suffered a stroke which stopped her from working for several years until she made a complete recovery. She continued to work and lived in Chelsea until her death in 1988.
