A fine bucolic landscape scene in watercolour with gouache details, by the English artist George Alexander (1832-1913). Alexander has employed a light layered palette in order to evoke the peace and quiet of the English countryside setting. Signed to the lower left corner, and inscribed with the title to the reverse. On thick card.

Condition

In very good condition for a picture of this age. Some even surface discolouration, and very light foxing near the upper edge.

Artist Biography

George Alexander (1832-1913) was a little-known painter who lived in Leeds and painted local scenes and also views of the Lake District and Wales. Legend has it that he began as a tobacconist's errand boy and made his first drawings on the inside wrapping paper of tobacco packets. He studied under a Yorkshire painter James Burras and showed at the RA, RSA and in Yorkshire. Leeds City Art Gallery holds a large collection of his watercolours.
