Here the artist has captured two large horses pulling a cart filled with hay while a farm hand guides them down the path. Completed in Elgee's distinctive style with light washes of colour. Signed. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. With small creases to the upper left. Overall the condition is good.

Cecil Elgee was a Devon artist and book illustrator. At the age of 18 she joined her parents in India and studied at the Bombay School of Art. She returned to her home town of Budleigh, Devon in 1927 and attended the Exeter School of Art. She became well known as a painter of animals. She is also well regarded for her illustrations in Costumes and Characters in the Days of the British Raj, published by Webb and Bowen.
