Framed 19th Century Oil - Two Children with a Birds Nest
DescriptionAn interesting mid to late 19th century oil depicting two young children with a birds nest. The artist has captured this delicate moment with fine brushwork and a detailed sense of realism. It is possible that these two children are 'unbreeched boys'. Until the early 20th century young boys were expected to wear dresses or 'skirts' until they were eight years old, a practice called 'breeching'. Their short hair could suggest that this composition captures two young boys at play. Well presented in an ornate gilt effect frame. Unsigned. On board.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craqueleure. Inspection under UV light reveals some minor touches of restoration, namely small dabs of overpainting to cover up minor paint loss to the left of the blonde child. Frame has minor losses to moulding at upper left. Overall in good condition.
