Mid 19th Century Oil - Portrait of Miss Anne Wainwright
An interesting 19th century portrait of a Miss Anne Wainwright. The artist has captured a middle aged lady in a black shawl and lace cap with ribbon. Her rather stern face has been painted with delicate detail and the artist has done well to capture a sense of the sitter's character.
Inscribed on the reverse 'Miss Anne Wainwright of Painswick. Aunt of Mrs Edward Playne. Great great aunt of Beatrice Playne (b.1908).' Beatrice Playne was a British art historian who specialized in Ethiopian Christian Art. She helped to discover the Garima Gospels.
This fine portrait is well presented in an ornate gilt swept frame. Framers label on the reverse for 'C.D. Soar & Son' suggests the frame dates to before 1950.Unsigned. On board.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including areas of discolouration and surface dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals signs of restoration to the edges and corners of the composition where small areas of paint loss have been corrected. Small touches to the face at the around the right eye. Overall the condition is very good. Small cracks to the moulding of the frame. One small loss to the upper left corner.
