Style of Henry Earp (1831-1914) - Fine Early 20th Century Oil, Cattle by Stream
A very fine original early 20th or late 19th Century work in the style of the British artist Henry Earp (1831-1914). The scene depicts cattle standing in a shallow stream near a gate, with a milking stool and a tin bucket in the foreground. The surrounding foliage and bank of trees suggest an autumnal setting, with the soft lighting of a late afternoon.
The artist has produced a very delicate and considered composition. The use of a layered palette with muted tones is in keeping with the popular Picturesque style, prevalent throughout the 19th Century. The lack of human figures shifts the viewers focus to reflect on the beauty of the natural world.
Handsomely presented in an original early 20th Century gilt wooden frame, with floral corner ornamentation and foliage mouldings.Unsigned. On board.
In very good condition for a picture of this age. There is some minor even surface discolouration. The frame has areas of restoration, and loss of gilding around the side edges of the frame. Scuffing and small losses to the corners.
