Artist Biography

Arthur Malcolm Fry (1909-2000) was a painter and art administrator. Malcolm, as he became known, was born in London where he attended Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith. His family moved to Bournemouth, where Fry found his first job working for an estate agent, taking evening classes at Bournemouth College of Art. He worked as an engineering draughtsman for the Post Office until the outbreak of war when, as a member of the supplementary reserve of officers, he was sent to France in September 1939. Captured at Dunkirk, he spent much of the war as a POW. He was involved in amateur dramatics and also painted stage scenery. After demobilisation Fry took the post of Director of the Central Institute for Art and Design, but the institute was winding down and before long he found himself unemployed.

A chance conversation led to three years as Registrar of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours before he took the post of Secretary to the senior Royal Watercolour Society at the RWS Galleries in Conduit Street in 1957. He subsequently masterminded the society's move to Bankside Gallery on the South Bank of the Thames some 20 years before the area became fashionable when Tate Modern was established there. Fry was also simultaneously Secretary to the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, the Imperial Arts League, the London Salon of Photography, the Society of Miniaturists and the Society of Portrait Sculptors, which he helped found. After 26 years Fry retired from his post in 1983 and concentrated on painting his own watercolours, mostly of English and French landscapes. He was made a Member of the RWS in 1977. He was made an MBE in 1983.
