A very fine late 19th century etching by the artist Lucien Gauthier. Capturing the hustle and bustle of late Victorian urban life, with immense detail and movement. This crisp early strike has been laid down on card. Signed in plate.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and light foxing. With a watermark to the left edge.

Artist Biography

Lucien Gautier was an etcher and designer born in Aix-en-Provence. He studied art under Marius Reynaud, followed by studies in Paris with Léon Gaucherel. He worked as a journeyman etcher in Paris reproducing the work of Corot and others. In 1875 Lucien began producing original work that was highly praised, earning him medals and awards. He is best known for his etchings of Paris and other French cities, and also created views of London, Rome, and Venice. His work is widely held by French institutions and in numerous private collections.
