A fine drypoint engraving by the listed artist James P. Power (fl.1920-1944), depicting the Belfry in the town of Bruges, Belgium, with a market and figures in the town square. Inscribed in graphite with the title, and signed to the lower right, as shown. On wove.

Condition

In good condition overall. There is a crease to the upper edge, across the top left corner. Slight discolouration elsewhere.

Artist Biography

James P. Power (fl.1920-1944) was a topographical and landscape painter in Britain and The Netherlands between the early 1920's and at least the 1960's. Power exhibited at Connell & Sons, Dudley Gallery, Royal Academy, and Royal Society of British Artists. He frequently painted in the West of England, particularly Cornwall. A painting entitled 'Malines' by Power is illustrated in Artwork Summer 1928. He lived in The Netherlands during the 1930's and left when World War II broke out and returned to the UK. A painting by Power of St. Paul's Cathedral from 1944 is held in the Cathedral's own collection. Power is listed as a Technical Advisor on the famous 1942 war-time film 'One of Our Aircraft Is Missing' directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. In what capacity is not known. The Town Hall, Middelburg one of Holland's finest Gothic buildings, destroyed by the German bombing in World War II was reproduced from a watercolour by James P. Power in the April 1942 edition of the Illustrated London News.
