J. H. Thompson - 1882 Oil, Beethoven's First Lesson
An interesting late 19th century oil depicting the composer Beethoven's first music lesson. The artist J.H. Thompson has captured a detailed interior scene, with delicate brushwork and fine handling of the medium.
Beethoven displayed his musical talents at an early age and was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and composer and conductor Christian Gottlob Neefe.
This fine oil is well presented in a gilt frame with scrolling leaf detail. Inscribed on the reverse with the date, title and artist's name. This inscription is very faint and is best seen under UV light.On board.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface marks. Inspection under UV light reveals no signs of restoration. Lightly varnished.
