Michael Crawley - 20th Century Watercolour, Pool of London
A fine and meticulously detailed watercolour riverscape by the 20th Century British artist Michael Crawley. The scene depicts the Pool of London on the River Thames, with a variety of vessels including sailing ships, rowing boats and steamboats. The 'pool' is a specific part of the Thames, which was navigable by tall-masted vessels from overseas. After the introduction of shipping containers in the 1960's, it's use declined and the wharves were demolished. This suggests this watercolour is c.1950 or earlier.
Crawley has a fine grasp of the medium, with subtle changes in palette portraying a late afternoon light, and the delicate layering of compositional elements, in order to build a sense of substantial depth. Colour is used by the artist in both line form and wash.
Well-presented in a narrow light wood frame, as shown, and inscribed to the reverse 'Pool of London'.Signed and incsribed on the reverse. On wove.
In fine condition overall, with only slight surface discolouration, expected for a picture of this age. The frame has some minor scuffing.
