L. Colborne - Fine 1860 Oil, Sailing Boat in Sunset
DescriptionA finely painted 19th century oil depicting a sailing boat in the sunset, with loose brushstrokes and areas with thick impasto giving the painting significant texture. It is signed to the lower right corner 'L. Colburne'. There is an inscription on the reverse which reads 'Roger Eliot. copied in 1860-61 by Ella jones.' Signed. On canvas on stretchers.
Scattered craquelure present, particularly to lower left quadrant of the picture. There are a few small areas where this craquelure has developed into a slow peeling of the paint. There are areas of surface paint loss to the outermost edges of the picture due to previous framing and another area of paint loss to the lower right section. Overall discolouration present, typical for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.
